What Is a Hearing Test?

Healthcare professionals use hearing tests to identify hearing loss. In your lifetime, you might get multiple hearing examinations. Nearly 2.5 billion people worldwide ─ or 1 in 4 people ─ will be living with some degree of hearing loss by 2050, warns the World Health Organization’s (WHO) https://www.who.int/news/item/02-03-2021-who-1-in-4-people-projected-to-have-hearing-problems-by-2050 .

A hearing test is typically a quick process that may be completed in one appointment.

People can find out whether they have hearing loss by undergoing a hearing assessment. The hearing assessment is painless and doesn’t require any extra preparation.

Hearing screenings are also possible. When you undergo a hearing screening, your hearing is screened to determine if it is normal. A comprehensive hearing evaluation or audiology evaluation should be conducted if you don’t pass the screening test. Audiologists perform hearing evaluations to determine your type of hearing loss hearing loss and its severity.

Who Needs a Hearing Test?

If you (or a loved one) feel like your hearing isn’t as good as it used to be, regardless of your age or line of work, you should get a hearing assessment. For those over 60, most audiologists advise yearly hearing examinations, particularly if you have experienced any hearing loss or have been around loud noises at work. A hearing test for younger adults should be performed every three to five years. Those who work in noisy industries like construction or restaurants are especially at risk for hearing loss.

If you have detected any early indicators of hearing loss or impaired hearing, hearing testing for children should be carried out as soon as possible.

The frequency of your hearing tests should be discussed with your hearing care professional if you have already had a hearing loss determined through testing. Hearing can vary over time, much like eyesight, therefore hearing aids also require regular adjustments.

Track Any Changes in Your Hearing

You can benefit from routine hearing assessments by using them to monitor any changes in your hearing. You can compare the outcomes of a test to earlier tests, so you will have a record of your hearing health. This enables you to determine whether your hearing may be deteriorating.  If you’re over 50 or work in a noisy area, it is important to have annual hearing tests.

Examine Your Overall Ear Health

A hearing assessment will examine the condition of your ears in addition to assessing your hearing. It’s an opportunity to get your ears examined for issues including wax accumulation, infections, or fluid. Both the area surrounding and inside your ear canal will be physically checked for any abnormalities.
